Versailles Parquet Panels
Classic patterns and bespoke marquetry, made to order in our Cotswolds workshop
The History of Versailles Parquet Flooring
The Versailles pattern has been laid in fine houses for over three centuries, ever since the parqueteers of Louis XIV replaced the marble floors of Versailles with interwoven oak panels that could survive the palace's damp. The geometry hasn't changed since 1684. What's changed is how few workshops still make them properly.
Most Versailles panels sold in the UK are factory-produced abroad in two or three stock sizes and a handful of finishes. Ours are made one commission at a time in our Gloucestershire workshop: cut, assembled, aged and hand-finished by the same small team that makes everything we sell. If your project needs a 900mm panel rather than an 800mm one, or a finish matched to a fabric swatch rather than a brochure, that's not a special request. It's how we work.
Oak and Walnut Versailles Panels, Engineered for Modern Homes
Each panel starts as sustainably sourced European oak or walnut, bonded to a high-density birch plywood base for stability. That construction matters with a panel floor more than any other format: a Versailles panel is dozens of individual pieces working together, and an unstable core will eventually show in the joints. The engineered build keeps the geometry true through seasonal movement and makes the panels fully compatible with underfloor heating.
The wear layer is solid oak or walnut at 4mm or 6mm, thick enough to be sanded and refinished for decades. Finishes are applied by hand in the workshop using VOC-free hardwax oils, from pale, raw-timber tones through smoked and fumed darks. Our Canvas collection covers eight finished designs; all of them can be adjusted, and none of them is the limit of what we can make.

Bespoke Marquetry Flooring
The Versailles pattern is where most panel floors stop. It's where our most interesting work starts. Because every panel is built by hand, we can produce designs that don't exist anywhere else: variations on the classic weave, geometric patterns drawn from a building's own period detailing, or fully bespoke marquetry designed around a single room. If a designer can draw it, we can usually make it.
This work suits projects where the floor is doing more than covering the ground: entrance halls, drawing rooms, libraries, and the kind of room a client walks into and looks down.
Versailles Panels for Interior Designers and Architects
Panel floors get specified early and live with a project for a long time, so we support them properly. We can supply sample panels and finish boards against your scheme, develop a custom finish to a brief, and provide technical datasheets for UFH and subfloor specification. Trade accounts include project pricing and a single point of contact from drawing to delivery.
Our floors have been specified for private residences and developments across the Cotswolds and the South West.
Order a Versailles Panel Sample
A Versailles panel needs to be judged in person: the scale, the joinery, the way a hand applied finish sits across the pattern. Because each panel is individually made in our workshop, we lend full sample panels rather than sending them out in the post. We charge a refundable deposit, you keep the panel while you make your decision, and the deposit is returned in full when the panel is returned.
Finish and timber samples are free, as with all our floors. Contact us on 01453 374114 to arrange a panel loan, or request finish samples through the contact page.
